Eyeshadow

Eyeshadow should ALWAYS be applied after cover-up, never before. The reason for this is that if you try to apply cover-up afterwards you will be dealing with a lot of smudging and fading of the eyeshadow, it will also most likely be smudged across your face. Eyeliner and mascara should be applied after the eyeshadow so that the eyeshadow does not cause the eyeliner to be partly blocked out on the top lid, and so that you don't accidentally get some eyeshadow stuck on your mascara, causing your eyelashes to partly go the color of your eyeshadow.

It's a common mistake for beginners to make their eyeshadow look very tacky, picking the right colors for your eyes is ESSENTIAL.

Purchasing Eye-Shadow

There are many different types of eye-shadows including, but most DEFINITELY not limited to powder, eyeshadow sticks (Like eyeliner but thicker tip), Cremes, and Pigments (A loose powder applied by dropping a bit of water in, goes on VERY bright).

I personally use the most common, the regular powder eye-shadows that can be found in most places that stock make-up.

lif_1118734Choosing the right color

-Remember to stay away from eye-shadows the same shade as your eyes, you want the color to COMPLIMENT your eyes, NOT compete with them.
-Remember that light shades bring out your eyes, darker shades give dimension. (ie small eyes = lighter shades, large or protruding eyes = darker shades)
-Its also best to stay away from colors matching your hair color exactly.
-WARNING FOR BLUE EYES Never, never EVER use any shade of blue eyeshadow, this will make your eyes look washed out.
-The best thing to do is to try out a few different colors to see what you like the best, following these few rules.

Choosing the right brand

As always, I am going to suggest MAC, though ANNABELLE is a cheap alternative and doesn't fade as quickly.
I have had some bad experiences with REVLON myself, the creme base eye-shadows, anyways. I never tried any of their other stuff after that, if you must use REVLON go for it, but I suggest staying away from their creme base eye-shadows.

"Natural"
Stick to Brown and Beige colors.

"Queeny"
Go crazy! Pick out your pink eye-shadow, your black, whatever you want!

Applying Eye-Shadow

Alright, now that you have purchased your eye-shadow lets get to how to apply it!

Browbone: Should be HIGHLIGHTED with eye-shadow, a big no-no in using dark colors here.

Crease: This is where the darkest colors of your makeup should be centered.

"Natural Look"

Step 1 : Pull out your makeup, pick out 3 colors that compliment the others (Usually you can purchase a 3-set from stores that sell makeup, all the colors should compliment each other).Step 2: Get out your "Soft Shadow Brush,"* or just a regular eyeshadow brush if you do not have a collection of brushes (tuttut)
Step 3: Light brush some of the LIGHTEST eye-shadow color right underneath your eyebrow on the browbone. DO NOT apply this heavily, this is whats known as the "High-lighting process."
Step 4: Take some of the medium color on an "All-Around" brush*. (MAKE SURE ITS A DIFFERENT BRUSH THAN THE ONE YOU USED IN STEP 3) Apply directly on your eyelid up to the crease.
Step 5: Take some of the darkest color on a "firm shadow" brush*, and run it along the crease, remember to blend in the color.

*Having many different brushes isn't essential for every-day use, but since I am starting school for cosmetology in August I am familiarizing myself with many different types of brushes, just remember you will need 2 different brushes, most eye-shadow kits come with a two-sided foam brush.

Smoky Eye Effect

"Queeny Look"

Repeat "Natural Look," only differences are that you should be using bolder, brighter colors as well as after you have finished applying the eye-shadow you should take the darkest color on the palette and apply it as a smudge underneath your eyes.
REMEMBER to smudge the bottom, most people cannot apply a dramatic look all around their eyes but most people do not look good this way.
